Do the affordability arithmetic yourself first — you will reach the same answer the lender does, several days earlier.

Loan approval feels opaque from the outside, which is why so much advice about it is superstition. In reality a lender is answering one question — can this person comfortably repay this amount over this term? — and almost everything you can do to improve your chances comes down to making that answer easy to reach and quick to verify.

Here is what actually moves the needle, in the order worth doing it.

1. Do the affordability arithmetic before anyone else does

This is the step most borrowers skip and the one that changes the most. Before you apply, work out for yourself whether the instalment fits. You will reach broadly the same conclusion the lender does, several days earlier and at no cost.

The instalment test

Add up what you already pay each month towards any credit — loans, hire purchase, card balances, app facilities. Add the instalment you are about to apply for. Compare the total against reliable monthly income. A common working rule is that total debt repayments should sit well below a third of dependable income, and lower if your income varies. Our repayment calculator gives you the instalment and the total repayable for any amount and term.

The buffer test

The instalment test is necessary but not sufficient. Subtract rent, school fees, food, transport, insurance and your existing obligations from a typical month's income, then subtract the new instalment. What remains is your buffer. If the answer is close to zero, the loan works only if nothing goes wrong — and something usually does. Shorten the amount rather than the buffer.

Doing this honestly sometimes produces the answer that you should not borrow yet, or should borrow less. That is a useful outcome, not a failed one.

2. Know and clean up your credit record

You are entitled to check your own record with a licensed credit reference bureau, and it is worth doing before a lender does it for you. What matters is not merely whether something is listed but what it is, how old it is, and whether it has been settled.

If you find a settled matter still showing, obtain the clearance documentation and have it ready. If you find something you do not recognise, raise it with the bureau. If you find a genuine current default, addressing it is more productive than applying around it. Our guide to building good credit in Kenya covers the longer-term work; before an application, the goal is simply that nothing surfaces as a surprise.

3. Make your income easy to verify

Lenders are not looking for a large income so much as a legible one. A continuous run of recent bank or M-Pesa statements that shows money arriving on a recognisable rhythm is worth more than a higher figure that appears erratically.

If you are self-employed, keep business flows in a business account rather than mixed with personal spending. If income is seasonal, supply enough months for the pattern to be visible rather than the strongest quarter alone. If a large irregular payment appears, be ready to explain what it was. None of this requires more income — only clearer presentation of the income you have.

4. Assemble the whole file before you apply

Most slow applications are not being deliberated over; they are waiting on one document. National ID, KRA PIN, income evidence, and the security documents for your product — the original logbook in your name with current comprehensive insurance for a logbook loan, a supplier proforma for asset finance, a settlement figure from your existing lender for refinancing.

Our application checklist sets out what each item is used for and the specific gaps that stall files most often. Closing them in advance is the single fastest thing you can do.

5. Ask for an amount that matches your income

The maximum available to you is set by the security. The right amount is set by your budget. These are different numbers and confusing them is a common cause of decline.

A request that plainly fits your income is straightforward to approve. A request at the ceiling requires the lender to be convinced, which takes longer and may not succeed. Borrowing what you need rather than what you can also costs less over the term — at a fixed 4% per month flat, every extra hundred thousand shillings is money you pay for whether you used it well or not.

The same logic applies to the term. A longer term lowers the instalment and raises the total cost; both are true simultaneously. Choose the shortest term whose instalment leaves you a real buffer.

6. Choose the product that fits the purpose

Applying for the wrong structure creates avoidable friction. If you own a vehicle and need cash for something else, that is a logbook loan. If you need equipment you do not yet own, that is asset finance, where the equipment secures its own purchase. If the problem is an existing facility that costs too much, that is refinancing rather than a second loan stacked on the first. If you already borrow with us and the need is short-term, the Weekend Loan exists for exactly that.

The comparison page puts all four together, and our article on secured versus unsecured borrowing explains why the structure affects the price so heavily.

7. Apply cleanly and honestly

Consistency across documents matters: the same name spelling, the same phone number, the same address. Answer verification calls. Declare existing obligations rather than hoping they are not visible — they are, and an undeclared facility is a far worse signal than a declared one.

Avoid making several applications at once in the hope that one lands. It rarely helps and it can make your position look more strained than it is. Prepare properly, apply once, and use the application tracker rather than reapplying while the first file is live.

If you are declined

Ask what the reason was, because the remedy depends entirely on it. A decline on documentation is solved in a day. A decline on credit history takes a few months of clean repayment behaviour. A decline on affordability means the amount or the term was wrong, and a smaller request may well succeed immediately.

Most reasons are temporary, and none of them are a verdict on you. Our article on the mistakes borrowers make covers the habits that turn a temporary decline into a recurring one.

The short version

Run your own affordability test, check your credit record, make your income legible, assemble the entire file first, request an amount that fits rather than the maximum, choose the right product, and apply once, honestly. A complete application receives a decision within 24 hours — and every one of those steps is within your control before you speak to anybody.

Start with the eligibility checker and the calculator. Between them you will know where you stand in about two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How can I improve my chances of loan approval in Kenya?

Make affordability obvious and verification easy. Show a continuous recent period of income, clear or explain anything outstanding on your credit record, assemble every document before you apply, and request an amount whose instalment fits comfortably within your income after existing obligations.

How much of my income should go to loan repayments?

A common working rule is that total debt repayments should stay well below a third of reliable monthly income, and lower still if your income varies month to month. The right figure for you is the one that leaves a genuine buffer after rent, school fees, food, transport and existing loans — not the maximum a calculator says you can service.

Does a CRB listing mean I cannot borrow?

Not automatically. Lenders look at what the listing is, how old it is, and whether it has been settled. A resolved matter with documentation attached is a very different signal from an unexplained current default. Check your own record with a licensed bureau before you apply so nothing surfaces as a surprise.

How long does approval take at Aspire?

A complete application receives a decision within 24 hours. The clock starts when the file is complete, so preparation is the main variable you control.

Does asking for a smaller amount improve my chances?

Often, yes. Approval is a judgement about whether the instalment fits your income, so a smaller amount over a sensible term is easier to approve than the maximum the security supports. Borrowing what you need rather than what you can also costs less.

What if I am declined?

Ask what the reason was. A decline for affordability is fixed differently from a decline for documentation or credit history, and most reasons are temporary. Address the specific issue and reapply rather than immediately trying several lenders at once.
